MICHAEL KLEIN
Floral Workshop
Artist Floral Workshop dates: December 5 - 7, 2018

Limit 12 students

The workshop will be held in Maxwell Alexander Gallery’s downtown LA gallery.

406 W. Pico Blvd. Los Angeles CA 90015

Class description

This workshop is designed to introduce you to an advanced approach to floral painting and Klein’s still life method. Due to the fleeting subject matter often associated with flowers, the instructor will walk you through a step by step process of capturing the essence of this difficult subject. The artist will start each day on a demonstration discussing basic principles of the block-in and getting the gesture of the setup. From there, Klein will show you how to plan several steps ahead in your painting to achieve the highest level of finish throughout the three day course. There will be a large emphasis placed on palette organization and developing the painting referencing impressionists techniques and conceptual form rendering. On the final day, we will go back into our paintings and learn how to render the subtle effects that occur in nature and finish the painting as a work of art.

Workflow of the class

Michael Klein

Michael Klein is part of a group of American realist painters leading a movement hearkening back to the Renaissance and French Academic traditions. Klein has had five solo exhibitions in the United States, also participating in several international group shows such as the American Chinese Oil Painting Artist League (ACOPAL) exhibition held at the World Art Museum in Beijing. He and his colleagues have started a new video production company at their studio in North Carolina, showcasing some of the most successful painters working today. They have also produced a series of videos called The Line, where the trio invite renowned artists to send artwork to the studio and a conversation takes place between the artwork and the hosts. The Line has grabbed the attention of audiences all over the world for its sincere effort to discuss connoisseurship in a way no one else is doing.

Klein’s work has been published in numerous magazines such as American Artist Magazine, American Arts Quarterly, Fine Art Connoisseur, and American Art Collector. In 2016, Klein was awarded the prestigious William F. Draper Grand Prize at the Portrait Society of America’s annual international portrait conference and competition.

Born in 1980, Klein was nineteen when he began his serious training in classical ateliers. His first teacher was Richard Whitney. One of New Hampshire's most prominent portrait painters, and a pupil of R.H. Ives Gammell. Klein continued studying in Minneapolis at the former atelier Lack, founded by Richard Lack, a classical painter whose efforts were in part responsible for the revival of traditional painting in the United States.

Seeking to broaden his education, Klein began studying at the Art Students League of New York under the tutelage of the late Nelson Shanks. In 2002, Klein entered what would become his final educational destination, the Water Street Atelier (now Grand Central Atelier), where he apprenticed under founder Jacob Collins until 2005.
