MAXWELL ALEXANDER GALLERY PRESENTS:
"ARTIST RETREAT, BLUFF UTAH"
Group Exhibition
Opening: March 12, 2022
Participating artists: Eric Bowman, Scott Burdick, G. Russell Case, Len Chmiel, Danny Galieote, Logan Maxwell Hagege, Brett Allen Johnson, Joshua LaRock, T. Allen Lawson, Jeremy Mann, Grant Redden, Joseph Todorovitch, and Kim Wiggins.
In early 2021, in the midst of the pandemic, we decided we needed to bring together the gallery artists to reconnect and find inspiration. "Artist Retreat" was the brain child of Logan Maxwell Hagege in collaboration with Maxwell Alexander Gallery and the special artists that create the works we show.
In a conversation with artist, Josh Elliott, he suggested the location of Bluff, Utah. It's about an hour north of Monument Valley and a couple hours south of Arches National Park. Once we had the location, we were off to the races. We invited many gallery artists, both male and female, and what was most fun was that we invited artists that you wouldn't normally considered "Western." A new perspective on the western landscape was something we were really excited about seeing.
In October 2021, all who could make it, met in remote Utah for a four day painting excursion. Every morning we would meet for a quick bite and then break into smaller groups and hit the road for the day. As an observer you could turn down dirt roads and see a lone artist with their easel set up on a dirt mound. Or you could drive for miles and not see a single sign of life.
Legendary artists T. Allen Lawson and Len Chmiel were some of the most enthusiastic and inspirational of the group. Showing everyone that the excitement of painting outdoors doesn't fade, no matter your level of success in the studio.
The landscapes in and around Bluff are some of the most unique. Mainly because of how diverse it is. Every couple of miles would bring about a dramatically different landscape. The river was home to numerous cottonwoods that just began to turn yellow upon our arrival. Valley of the Gods was a miniature, more remote Monument Valley. Mexican Hat featured a rock formation that resembled an upside down sombrero balancing atop a thin tall piece of an eroded butte. In the hills behind Mexican Hat was a geological picture show with swirling colors like sound waves. Up a mountain and over a ridge was a alien landscape best resembling the Grand Canyon. There were huge cloud formations, bright sunny skies, freezing cold nights, and everything in-between.
On the last day of the trip everyone met for a group paint out -- and the obligatory group photo. Artists were going from easel to easel, discussing the trip, trying to figure out what part of the vast landscape others were focusing on, or simply enjoying the last few hours in the desert sun. That evening back at the hotel, all the artists set up their on location paintings on the floor outside the hotel. A private art show of wet paintings for artists by artists (and a couple lucky hotel guests that happened to walk by).
An exhibition of the on location paintings, and studio paintings inspired by the Maxwell Alexander Gallery Artist Retreat will be part of our March 12, 2022 group exhibition. Information on purchasing and image preview will be available in the coming week.
