For those who have not been following its rise this year, Maxwell Alexander Gallery in Culver City, California, is a newer gallery representing some of the best young painters working in contemporary realism. The gallery has quickly established itself as an important locus for the younger generation of Western artists who are creating innovative work that plays on traditional themes. With a talented stable of artists based mostly in California and the Western states, Maxwell Alexander Gallery is emerging as one of the more important destinations for contemporary realism and contemporary landscapes.

The landscape genre unites these works, although their subjects vary quite broadly. Many of the featured artworks picture the plains and plateaus of the American Southwest, reflecting the gallery’s particular strength in Western art. With their offerings, Tim Solliday, Dennis Ziemienski, Glenn Dean, and G. Russell Case give new life to barren deserts, painting with unique sensitivity and deft flourishes. Josh Elliott’s “Southern Alps” captures the majesty and serenity of the mountainous region on New Zealand’s South Island, while Kim Cogan and Ray Roberts have each painted dramatic locales where land meets water. As a group, these paintings manifest new directions in the landscape genre, beginning with a traditional theme and emerging with intriguing, unexpected variations
